Self-publishing--and the use of POD houses like Nothing Binding--is appropriate for some authors, but not for all of them. It depends what you want to accomplish, what your budget is, whether it's important to get your book into chain bookstores, and so on. I'm going to write an article about this eventually.

Very interesting post. I am curious to try it out myself using your outline. I am curious to know if you endorse self-publishing or not. I have had great success as an independent author at http://nothingbinding.com/
I was hoping to check back with to see what opinion you may have on this idea. Personally, I feel it is well worth it.

Yes, this is really true. You can actually write a book in such short time periods. I'd like to share my experience. In my case, I was touched by this girl so much that I went into extremely emotional state and was able to write 100 poems in less than 30 days. Being a new writer with no background, I went for self publishing and my book was out within a month! So yes, if you have the zeal to do what you want to do, it's possible.

I think given that you can do it, doesn't mean that you have to do it all the time. I think the time it takes to write a book really depends on how ready you are to write it. You can take decades to complete a book or just a few nights; and the same holds true for mathematical research work...

Hi Sallie,

Interesting topic. And thanks for bringing me into it per my bit on WBJB radio and Author Access with regard to my book, "How to Write a Successful Book Proposal in 8 Days or Less."

You might be interested in a few more facts included in my hallmark book, "The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book" (revised 2nd edition publication date toward the end of September 2007). Surveys show it typically takes around 725 hours to write a nonfiction book or 90 eight-hour days.

I once wrote a 16-chapter book for a client in 3 weeks. I wrote the first draft of my book, "Quest for Truth" (200 pages) in 8 months while working a full-time job. And it took me 5 years to research and write a 360-page local history on a part-time basis while helping to plan my daughters' weddings, welcoming grandbabies into the world, etc.

I guess the point is that if you're motivated enough, you can write a book under just about any circumstances.

Keep up the good work.

PS I'm running a Prepublication DISCOUNT offer on my newly revised "The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book" and the accompanying "Author's Workbook" through September 20, 2007. www.matilijapress.com/rightway.html.
